2016 Subaru WRX Earns Top Safety Pick

Subaru models have long been known for two things: they are the workhorses of the automotive world and they are some of the safest vehicles on the road. Along with their reasonable price tags, this not only makes them great starter cars for teens, but it also makes them excellent family cars. So anyone looking to pick up a new Subaru will be happy to hear that the 2016 Subaru WRX earned accolades from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), nabbing the organization's highest rating, the Top Safety Pick Plus.

Needless to say, this is a major feather in Subaru's cap. Although they have a spectacular record of achieving top safety ratings across their vehicle lineup, it wasn't until recently that the WRX model became eligible for safety testing. Previously, the WRX was lumped in with the Impreza, with the two vehicles deemed to be similar enough that testing the WRX was unnecessary. But the 2015 model featured enough differences to qualify for independent testing. And it performed admirably, earning a Top Safety Pick rating in 2014. This year, in turn, the WRX upheld the standards of the brand by earning top honors along with the Impreza.

In order to merit a Top Safety Pick, vehicles have to meet set standards for a variety of criteria, such as front, side, and roof strength, amongst other things, as determined through testing. Concerning the 2016 WRX, the IIHS commented that "the driver's survival space was maintained well" during crash testing. But to earn the Top Safety Pick Plus rating, automobiles have to pass all tests AND earn a superior rating for front crash prevention. To accomplish this, they must be equipped with applicable technology. In the case of the WRX, this includes EyeSight, a system involving stereo camera technology that can detect hazards and engage pre-collision braking to help prevent accidents.

If you had any doubts that a Subaru WRX was safe to drive, this year's IIHS safety results should put your mind at ease. There are few car companies that consistently earn as many top honors for safety as Subaru, and across their entire vehicle lineup, no less. And with attractive styling, sporty handling, and a truly affordable price tag, most consumers would be hard pressed to find a better car on the market, or at least in the same vehicle class. In other words, the WRX would make for a great addition to any garage.
