The New 2020 Subaru Outback

Subaru has increased its US car sales every year from 2009 to 2019. This is the highest growth of any mainstream brand of automobile over the last decade. The Outback is one of Subaru's top-selling vehicles and played a big part in that success. Let's look at the new 2020 Subaru Outback review and whether it's the right vehicle for you.

Class-Leading Vehicle
The Subaru Outback has a lot of advantages over other vehicles in its class. One of the biggest benefits is the comfort and quality of the Subaru cabin. The interior of the 2020 Outback outshines most of the competition, with quality materials - even in the base model. There is plenty of space for up to 5 adults, with a good driver seat position that offers exceptional visibility in all directions.

The 2020 Outback also offers excellent off-road performance. Its class-leading ground clearance makes it a capable off-road vehicle without sacrificing comfort and drivability on typical roads. In fact, 25 percent of Outback owners take their vehicle off-road, making it one of the most widely used off-road vehicles that isn't designed specifically for that type of use.

Standard Features
The 2020 Subaru Outback features several standard items that would cost extra on the competition and may even have been optional on past years of the Outback. First of all, every model of the 2020 Outback includes Subaru's all-wheel drive (AWD) system. This feature plays a big part in the Outback's great off-road capabilities. But you don't have to sacrifice fuel economy to get that added control off-road. The 2020 Outback gets up to 33 miles per gallon on the highway thanks to its efficient 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine.

Subaru's EyeSight Safety System
The standard EyeSight safety system adds several safety features to all models of the 2020 Outback. These features include:
   • Adaptive cruise control
   • Lane keep assist
   • Pre-collision braking and throttle management

The EyeSight system includes a dual-camera system that's mounted alongside the rearview mirror. This system continuously monitors the road ahead to watch for dangerous situations. The pre-collision braking system can apply full-stop brakes in the case of a potential rear-end collision. IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) studies have shown this feature can reduce injuries from front-end crashes by as much as 85 percent.

Adaptive cruise control lets you set your cruise control to stay a certain distance from the vehicle ahead of you. The EyeSight system can adjust your throttle to keep a consistent distance, even if the car ahead slows down - and the lane keep assist system will warn you if you start to drift out of your lane unexpectedly.

Trim Levels
The 2020 Outback comes in several trim levels:
   • Base model
   • Premium
   • Limited
   • Touring
   •  Onyx Edition XT
   • Limited XT
   • Touring XT

Base Model Outback
The base model of the 2020 Outback comes with plenty of options that would only be available on higher models of some competitors. The base Outback includes a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat and a 4-way adjustable passenger seat, automatic climate control, and a 7-inch dual-screen infotainment system with 2 front USB ports and Bluetooth built-in.

Outback Premium
The next step up, the Outback Premium, adds heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and dual-zone climate control. The Premium also includes a larger 11.6-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system and 2 extra USB ports for the rear seats. This model has a couple of optional packages that include extra safety features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alerts as well as a moonroof and navigation system.

Outback Limited
When you move up another step to the Limited model, you get an 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat, heated rear seats, keyless entry, and an upgraded Harman Kardan premium sound system. The Limited also adds a power liftgate to the vehicle.

Outback Touring
Moving up one more step gets you to the top-of-the-line Touring edition. This model adds Nappa leather seats, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a moonroof, and Subaru's DriverFocus system that can help reduce driver distraction.

Outback Onyx Edition XT
The next step up the line is the Onyx Edition XT. The XT models of the 2020 Outback include the more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. This engine jumps from 182 horsepower in the base engine to 250 horsepower, giving you a lot more power to work with. The Onyx XT also adds water-repellant synthetic leather seats and an upgraded off-road mode, along with all the same features as the Premium model.

Outback Limited XT
The Limited XT includes everything in the regular Limited model along with the more powerful turbocharged engine and the moonroof, heated steering wheel, and DriverFocus system.

Outback Touring XT
The Touring XT is the top model in the 2020 Outback lineup and features all the options from the various models of Outback along with the more powerful turbocharged engine.

What's New for 2020
The 2020 Subaru Outback is an all-new design that replaces the previous generation that had been around since 2015. Structurally, the new model of Outback is built on Subaru's Global Platform which is designed to absorb up to 40 percent more energy in a front-end collision than the 2019 model would.

The infotainment system has been upgraded to run on a dual-processor platform. One of the processors is dedicated to the entertainment system and the other to the climate control system. An 11.6-inch touchscreen is standard on all models except the base model for 2020.

All models of the 2020 Outback include Subaru's continuously variable transmission (CVT). For 2020, this transmission offers an 8-speed manual mode, compared to a 6-speed version in the 2019 Outback. The 2020 Outback includes hollow anti-roll bars to help keep the weight down and is 1.4 inches longer than the 2019 model. This extra length extends the rear seat to add extra legroom in the back.
